Company
Profile
Zircar Zirconia, Inc. employs the original "ZIRCAR PROCESS " to manufacture Yttria stabilized Zirconia fibers, textile and rigid insulation products. They also manufacture alumina and exotic oxide fiber products with this unique method.  In addition, they offer 30 years of experience machining custom parts and constructing fiber insulation assemblies.

The “Zircar Process” replicates the gross physical structure of an organic precursor fiber into a ceramic fiber structure. Typically these fibers are 6 to 10 microns in diameter and have a serrated outside surface.

All ZY products are phase stabilized with ~10wt% yttria (yttrium oxide) to maintain a stable tetragonal / cubic structure. The yttria, in a solid solution within the zirconia, stabilizes the tetragonal / cubic structure by preventing the monoclinic to tetragonal crystal transformation that occurs at 1170°C in un-stabilized or insufficiently stabilized zirconia. This undesirable phase transformation would cause an 11% volume change in the crystal unit cell size that can cause micro-cracking and reduced physical strength in the bulk solid.

Zirconia Felt
The zirconia felt structure is a ‘needled felt’ which retains its fibrous nature to 2480°C.  The stabilized zirconia composition permits the advantages of fibrous insulations to be extended into temperature regions well above the melting temperatures of siliceous and alumina insulation materials.

Zirconia Felt Types ZYF-50, ZYF-100, and ZYF-150 are composed of 100%, 4-6 micron diameter, yttria-stabilized zirconia fibers which are mechanically interlocked.  Designed for use in extremely corrosive environments and high temperatures, these felts are 100% inorganic fibers and contain no binders. They undergo no phase transitions on temperature cycling and are very effective thermal insulators, capable of use at temperatures in excess of 1930°C.

Alumina Boards, Type Buster
Zircar alumina insulation Type Buster is a rigid, fibrous ceramic material produced by vacuum forming alumina fibers with either a high purity alumina binder in BusterA-30 for use at 1600oC or with silica binders in BusterM-35 that form a more thermal shock resistant mullite bond for use at 1700oC.  BusterM2-35 is a mullite bonded 1800oC version that exhibits complete dimensional stability to 1700oC.

Buster is available in boards, cylinders and custom machined parts.  All Buster boards are pre-fired for organic-free use.  Their fine grain quality enables precision machining.  All these features make Buster an ideal insulation material for hot face insulation in rapid heat electric furnaces and other types of thermal process systems.

Zirconia Cement Type ZR-CEM
Zircar Zirconia Cement Type ZR-CEM is an off white single part yttria-stabilized zirconia adhesive with a useful temperature limit of 2200°C.  ZR-CEM is formulated specifically for bonding Zircar Zirconia Felts, Boards and Cylinders to themselves or to back-up thermal insulations such as porous firebrick, alumina fiber and alumino-silicate fiber boards.  ZR-CEM is composed of yttria-stabilized zirconia milled fibers and sub-micron particles.  Potassium silicate and zirconium acetate binders are added to enhance bonding characteristics.  ZR-CEM will not bond to non-porous surfaces such as glass or steel.  ZR-CEM is mildly acidic (pH 5.4) and forms a strong bond upon removal of the water solvent.

Zirconia Boards Type ZYFB
Type ZYFB Boards, Discs and Cylinders are rigid, refractory structures composed of
yttria-stabilized zirconia fibers that do not undergo the usual phase transitions associated with pure zirconia.  Type ZYFB is ideally suited for thermal insulation  applications under conditions of ultra-high temperatures and in a variety of severe environments.  ZYFB is fired at a high temperature to impart good dimensional stability up to 1650°C and can be used at higher temperatures where some additional sintering can be tolerated. It has good hot strength up to 1400°C and can be used as a self supporting setter for loads equal to twice its own weight up to this temperature.

ZYFB is available in two densities.  ZYFB-3 has a bulk density of 30 pcf and possesses extremely low thermal conductivity.  ZYFB-6 has a bulk density of 60 pcf and is stronger than ZYFB-3.  Both are zirconia bonded and have exceptional resistance to oxidizing and reducing atmospheres at high temperatures
