Working Sieves

What Do We Mean By Working Sieves?

Because we carry high precision Mid-Point and Mesh Certified Test Sieves (MCTS) we need to make a distinction between them and the work-horse sieves used day to day. These sieves that do not require special inspection but need to conform to the basic standards of ASTM E-11, we call Working Sieves. The Working Sieves are available in Brass frames with brass or Stainless Steel mesh. We also supply stainless steel frames with stainless steel mesh. Working Sieves are available with 8 inch and 12 inch diameter frames. The frames are full height and one half height depths.

These sieves are constructed using ASTM standard wire cloth (mesh) and are supplied with a Certificate of Conformance. The mesh has not been individually inspected. Each sieve has a serial number which is related to a lot number.

Working Sieves are used in a diverse range of industries that include construction, mining, food, soil testing pharmaceuticals. They can be checked against master stacks, master samples or calibration spheres (beads) to test for wear or mesh damage.

There are no more economical and practical sieves for everyday use where extra tight and traceable standards are not required.

These Working Sieves are the intelligent choice for the application that has a limited requirement for traceability but needs a work horse sieve to perform on test after test.

Woven Wire Mesh Sieves

Woven wire mesh sieves are the most widely used test sieves for all types of laboratory particle size analysis. They are made with only the highest quality materials and are available in diameter sizes of 38, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 315, 350, 400 and 450 mm, as well as 3, 8, 12 and 18 inches.

They can be supplied with aperture sizes ranging from 125 mm down to 20 μm and in full or half height versions.

Woven wire mesh sieves are available in frame materials of either brass or stainless steel with larger diameter sieves also available in plated steel. Other materials and sizes can be produced to order.

Perforated Plate Sieves

Hengfeng manufacture a wide range of perforated plate sieves for the many industries that require them. These are available in diameter sizes of 200, 300, 315, 350, 400 and 450 mm.

Aperture sizes range from 125 mm to 4 mm in square hole and 125 mm to 1 mm in round hole.

Perforated plate sieves can be supplied in frame materials of either brass or stainless steel, and all are manufactured to the highest engineering standards to ensure quality and accuracy.

All 200 mm perforated plates are stainless steel. Larger Perforated plates in stainless steel on request.

Mid-Point Test Sieves

What Is A Mid-Point Sieve?

A mid-point test sieve has had the mesh inspected. The sieve is then selected as a mid-point if the results give tolerances that are in the middle of the ASTM Standard. For example, the ASTM permissible variations for the mesh of a No. 40 sieve (425μ) are:

1:Average Opening ±19μ.
2:Opening Dimension of 396μ not exceeded by more than 5% of the openings.
3:maximum individual opening 502μ.

The mid-point would have a variation in Average Opening of ±9.5μ, opening dimension of 396μ not exceeded by more than 2.5% of the openings and a maximum individual opening of 463.5μ. The effect of this tightened tolerance is an improvement in variation of approximately 30%. These results are traceable to a NIST standard.

Where Should Mid-Point Sieves Be Used?

When a process requires a high level of repeatability, mid-points can be used on all sieve tests. However, the predominant application for the mid-point sieves is as master stack. A master stack is used to check and recalibrate sieves used in everyday testing.

If your process must have traceability and the precision and repeatability of your sieve testing results is critical to your process or customer requirements, Mid-Point sieves should be considered for the master stacks and for every day testing of supercritical processes.
