A power supply is a device that supplies electrical energy to one or more electric loads. In most cases, the power supply controls the output voltage or current to a specific value. This specific value of output voltage or current is held nearly constant despite (small) variations in either the load or the supply.
From the design and construction point of view, power supplies for electronic devices can be broadly divided into linear and switching power supplies. A linear supply is usually a relatively simple design, but relatively bulky, heavy, and less efficient because of the large mains-frequency transformers and heat-sinked. A switched-mode supply of the same rating will be smaller, is usually more efficient, but will be more complex.
From application point of view, most ommercially available power supplies fall into the following categories:
Battery
DC power supply
Programmable power supply
Uninterruptible power supply
High-voltage power supply
Voltage multipliers
A well desgined power supply should include overload protection mechanism such as
