Lapping is a machining process that is used to obtain a specific surface roughness; it is also used to obtain very accurate surfaces, usually very flat surfaces. Lapping is usually achieved by rubbing two surfaces together with an abrasive between them.

One of the everyday examples of lapping is using a piece of flat glass to lap a warped sharpening stone so that the surface of the stone can regain its flatness for better contact and constant angle during sharpening.
