I have been commisioned to design a spiral helix out of 3mm sheet steel.  Sure it is easy enough to design in 3D CAD, but does anyone have any idea how to make it?

I think that lasercutting the profile (which will appear like an annulus with a wedge shaped cut-out) will be O.K.

In order to create the helix, is it as simple as fixing one end of this cut-out and lifting the other - or is there a complex rolling process that needs to be involved?
