Good point, rolschwarz.  VB is flexible in that you can write good stand alone applications and also write macros for other MS applications.

I'm going with Delphi myself because I like its visual components better than VB's and it appears to support object oriented programming (and consequently code re-use) better than VB and I'm prepared to limit myself to writing stand alone applications for the windows environment.
