I will add that the conversion tables are empirical and are based on steel and are not always valid for other metals/alloys.

 The only hardness standards I'm aware of that are mathematically convertable from one to the other are Knoop and Vickers. I like the Knoop indenter geometry myself because it is easier to get multiple indentations in thin sections with it, but the Europeans are in love with Vickers and have written it into thier standards
