ABS / PC Flame-Retardant Grades, Molding and Extrusion ABS is a subcategory of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene. The additative is added during the manufacturing process. Its flexural modulus ranges from 350 to 400 MPa. Its tensile strength ranges from 5800 to 9300 MPa at break. Its flexural strength ranges from 12000 to 14500 MPa. Its compressive strength ranges from 11000 to 11300 MPa. Its Izod Impact strength ranges from 4.1 to 14 J/cm. Its elongation at break ranges from 20 to 70 %. Its hardness ranges from 115 to 119 Rockwell R. Its specific gravity ranges from 1.17 to 1.23. Its molding pressure ranges from 10 to 20 MPa.
Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene, also known as ABS, is a thermoplastic. Common trade names are Cycolac and Lustran. It is tough, hard and rigid. It has good chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and creep resistance. It is electroplatable and inexpensive. It has moderate mechanical strength but with a tendency to stress crack. Also, it will be degraded (dissolved) when exposed to acetone. ABS is commonly used in electronic housings, auto parts, consumer products, pipe fittings, waste pipes, computer housings (electroplated on the inside), and automotive interior and exterior trim. ABS is considered superior for its hardness, gloss, toughness, and electrical insulation properties. Although ABS plastics are used primarily for their mechanical properties, they also have good electrical properties that are fairly constant over a wide range of frequencies.
