Flame-Retardant Grades, Molding and Extrusion ABS is a subcategory of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene. It is specially formulated to flame-retardant grades, molding and extrusion. Its elastic modulus ranges from 130 to 310 MPa. Its flexural modulus ranges from 300 to 600 MPa. Its tensile strength ranges from 3300 to 8000 MPa at break. Its flexural strength ranges from 6200 to 14000 MPa. Its compressive strength ranges from 6500 to 7500 MPa. Its Izod Impact strength ranges from 1.4 to 12 J/cm. Its elongation at break ranges from 1.5 to 80 %. Its hardness ranges from 100 to 120 Rockwell R. Its specific gravity ranges from 1.16 to 1.21. Its coefficient of thermal expansion ranges from 65 to 95 x 10-6/°C. Its melting temperature ranges from 110 to 125 °C. Its molding pressure ranges from 8 to 25 MPa.
Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene, also known as ABS, is a thermoplastic. Common trade names are Cycolac and Lustran. It is tough, hard and rigid. It has good chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and creep resistance. It is electroplatable and inexpensive. It has moderate mechanical strength but with a tendency to stress crack. Also, it will be degraded (dissolved) when exposed to acetone. ABS is commonly used in electronic housings, auto parts, consumer products, pipe fittings, waste pipes, computer housings (electroplated on the inside), and automotive interior and exterior trim. ABS is considered superior for its hardness, gloss, toughness, and electrical insulation properties. Although ABS plastics are used primarily for their mechanical properties, they also have good electrical properties that are fairly constant over a wide range of frequencies.
