Injection Molding Grade, Platable ABS is a subcategory of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene. It is specially formulated to injection molding grade, platable. Its elastic modulus ranges from 320 to 380 MPa. Its flexural modulus ranges from 340 to 390 MPa. Its tensile strength ranges from 5200 to 6400 MPa at break. Its flexural strength ranges from 10500 to 11500 MPa. Its Izod Impact strength ranges from 4 to 8.3 J/cm. Its hardness ranges from 103 to 109 Rockwell R. Its specific gravity ranges from 1.04 to 1.07. Its coefficient of thermal expansion ranges from 47 to 53 x 10-6/°C. Its melting temperature ranges from 100 to 110 °C. Its molding pressure ranges from 8 to 25 MPa.
Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene, also known as ABS, is a thermoplastic. Common trade names are Cycolac and Lustran. It is tough, hard and rigid. It has good chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and creep resistance. It is electroplatable and inexpensive. It has moderate mechanical strength but with a tendency to stress crack. Also, it will be degraded (dissolved) when exposed to acetone. ABS is commonly used in electronic housings, auto parts, consumer products, pipe fittings, waste pipes, computer housings (electroplated on the inside), and automotive interior and exterior trim. ABS is considered superior for its hardness, gloss, toughness, and electrical insulation properties. Although ABS plastics are used primarily for their mechanical properties, they also have good electrical properties that are fairly constant over a wide range of frequencies.
