Glass / Mineral Filled LCP is a subcategory of Liquid Crystal Polymer. The additative is added during the manufacturing process. Its elastic modulus ranges from 2400 to 3100 MPa. Its flexural modulus ranges from 2200 to 2900 MPa. Its tensile strength ranges from 21000 to 25000 MPa at break. Its flexural strength ranges from 31000 to 34000 MPa. Its compressive strength ranges from 18000 to 21000 MPa. Its Izod Impact strength ranges from 1.6 to 3.8 J/cm. Its elongation at break ranges from 1.4 to 2.3 %. Its hardness ranges from 76 to 79 . Its specific gravity ranges from 1.68 to 1.89. Its coefficient of thermal expansion ranges from 6 to 8 x 10-6/°C.
Liquid Crystal Polymer, also known as LCP, is a thermoplastic. Common trade names are Vectra and Xydar. Although expensive, LCP has excellent strength and good high temperature properties. It can be used in thin wall (as thin as 0.2 mm) applications. LCP parts can withstand vapor phase reflow and autoclaving temperatures of 135 ºC. It has high chemical resistance and is flame retardant. It has very low coefficient of thermal expansion and high tensile modulus (from 10 to 24 GPa). LCP is commonly used in high-performance engineering applications such as electrical connectors and machine parts. It can be used in surgical devices, and some LCP's meet the standards of USP Class VI.
