Introduction

LoanIQ 2.3 for Palm is the current version. Users with older versions should download this free update. You will need to delete your existing LoanIQ first before you install the two files that come with the package. If you already have a registration Key, that should still work.

LoanIQ is a an application for the Palm® PDA that provides comprehensive loan and lease calculations. An infinite variety of loan and lease calculations can be performed through it's easy-to-use interface. This interface allows you to choose any variable as the unknown, calculated in real-time with every key stroke so you never have to worry about hitting the 'enter' key to update a result. The interest can be interest rate or money factor. The residual value at the end of a lease can be percentage (%) of the original amount or dollar amount ($). It also provides payment schedules including interest, principal, and balance.

LoanIQ for Palm is a handheld version of the popular Loan Calculator utilities.

System Requirements

LoanIQ runs on PalmOS version 2 and higher. It runs on all newer Palm models and Palm compatible PDAs, except for the original Palm 1000 and 5000 models.

Installation

LoanIQ for Palm can be downloaded from the eFunda Palm store. You will receive a compressed file called LoanIQ.zip that can be uncompressed by most free file-compression utilities, such as WinZip for windows and ZipIt for Mac.

There are two (2) files in LoanIQ.zip that need to be installed on the Palm:
  - LoanIQ.prc — the executable application
- MathLib.prc — a freeware mathematic routine library
Please note: MathLib is a free shared library that can be used by any OS 2.0+ Pilot program that needs IEEE 754 double precision math functions. It's distributed under the terms of the GNU Library General Public License, and is freely available with full source code and documentation at the MathLib Information web page. It's not a part of the LoanIQ program, and you're not paying anything for its use; a copy is simply included in this archive for your convenience.

To install files onto your Palm, check your Palm user manual or follow these brief instructions:
Delete any previously installed LoanIQ from your Palm.
  1. Run the Palm Install Tool program on your computer.
2. The Palm Install Tool will ask for the filename to be installed. Select "Browse" and navigate your computer's file structure to locate the directory that contains the two (2) files that need to be installed (listed above).
3. Select the first file to be installed, and click "Install" on the Palm Install Tool. This will instruct the HotSync Manager to install the selected file the next time your Palm is hotsynced with the computer.
4. Repeat Step 3 for the other file that need to be installed for LoanIQ.
5. Hotsync your Palm. That's it; you should now have LoanIQ successfully installed on your Palm. If not, please verify that the above steps were followed, and repeat the process if necessary. Otherwise, please defer to the Trouble Shooting section of your user manual.

Display and Usage

To perform a calculation, one must select an UNKNOWN variable from the 4 (or 5 in lease mode) financial variables, and enter numeric values for the remaining variables. By default, the program first starts with PAYMENT as the unknown variable, and provides default numeric values for the other variables. (Later, the program will start with the loan/lease that was last performed).

The financial variables available are described below:
  - AMOUNT: the loan/lease principal, total amount borrowed
- INTEREST: annual interest rate for the loan
- PERIODS: number of payment periods in the loan;
e.g. a 3-year loan compounded monthly would include 36 payment periods
- PAYMENT: amount due at each payment period
- RESIDUAL: for lease calculations, the residual amount at the conclusion of the loan
- EXTRA COST: for APR calculations, the sum of the additional fees incurred at the beginning of the loan, such as the closing cost, the points, the document fees, and so on.

Of the 4 financial variables involved in a loan calculation, one can freely specify 3 of them. The value for the final variable is determined from the other three. This dependent variable is called the "unknown" and is selected by the user.

The current UNKNOWN variable is highlighted by both a radio button and a bold variable name. To set another variable as the unknown, select that variable's name.

To change the NUMERIC VALUES for the other variables, click on the current numeric value of the desired variable. This will place a data-entry box around the current value. Data can now be entered using the numeric keypad at the lower-right of the screen.

Hitting the "back arrow" will delete the last number entered, whereas hitting "Clr" will clear the entire entry. The "Enter" key is provided for redundancy; the loan calculator updates automatically after each number is entered.

One can TOGGLE the interest variable. Specifically, one can select either INTEREST or MONEY FACTOR.

To perform a LEASE calculation, click the "Lease" button at the bottom of the screen. This will enable a 5th financial variable (Residual Value, that can be percentage or dollar amount) to enter the calculations. To change back to a LOAN calculation, click the "Loan" botton.

To view a payment schedule for a given loan/lease calculation, click the "Schedule" button at the bottom of the screen. This will provide a screen showing 12 consecutive payments, where each payment period is assumed to be 1 month. By default, the first screen corresponds to the first "year" of the loan. To change the year, select "year" at the top of the screen to obtain a pull-down menu with the available years, and select another year. One can also change the output variables by picking on one of the variable names to obtain a pull-down menu.

Registration

The free-distributed demo version of LoanIQ allows only the PAYMENT variable to be the unknown. To set any of the other variables as the unknown (and to show your support for this kind of software!), please register the LoanIQ program. Registration only costs ten dollars ($10 USD).

When registering, please provide the ID NUMBER from your Palm which is provided under the Info menu. In return, you will obtain a key that will enable the full program version.
