Introduction

UnitsIQ for Palm 2.7 is currently the most up-to-date version. UnitsIQ is an application for the Palm® PDA that provides comprehensive unit conversions. It allows the user to convert physical values expressed in one unit to any of the other units within the same category. Release 2.7 includes 921 different units spread across 77 categories, ranging from Acceleration to Volumetric Flow Rate. Of which, the 20 hardness units are converted from one another nonlinearly, using a fourth-order polynomial curve-fit method. Moreover, 10 gage units (wire and sheet metal) are also included where non-exact fits are displayed in a slide bar between the two nearest gage numbers, just like the online version.

As is since release 2.5, users can enter their own custom units in most categories, except hardness and gages.

System Requirements

UnitsIQ runs on PalmOS version 2 and higher, including the latest PalmOS 5. It runs on all newer Palm models and Palm compatible PDAs, except for the original Palm 1000 and 5000 models.

Installation

UnitsIQ for Palm can be downloaded from the eFunda Palm store. You will receive a compressed file called UnitsIQ.zip that can be uncompressed by most free file-compression utilities, such as WinZip for windows and ZipIt for Mac.

There are two (2) files in UnitsIQ.zip that need to be installed on the Palm:
  - UnitsIQ.prc — the executable application
  - UnitsIQDB.pdb — the unit database

To install files onto your Palm, check your Palm user manual or follow these brief instructions:
Delete any previously installed UnitsIQ from your Palm.
  1. Run the Palm Install Tool program on your computer.
2. The Palm Install Tool will ask for the filename to be installed. Select "Browse" and navigate your computer's file structure to locate the directory that contains the two files that need to be installed (listed above).
3. Select the first file to be installed, and click "Install" on the Palm Install Tool. This will instruct the HotSync Manager to install the selected file the next time your Palm is hotsynced with the computer.
4. Repeat Step 3 for the remaining file that needs to be installed for UnitsIQ.
5. Hotsync your Palm. That's it; you should now have UnitsIQ successfully installed on your Palm. If not, please verify that the above steps were followed, and repeat the process if necessary. Otherwise, please defer to the Trouble Shooting section of your user manual.

Display and Usage

To perform a unit conversion, one must select a unit category, two units within that category, and a numeric value for the first (top) unit. By default, the program first starts in the LENGTH category, converts from INCH to METER, and sets a numeric value of 1 for the inch unit. (Later, the program will start with the conversion that was last used).

To select another CATEGORY, click on the current category to obtain a pulldown list (or hit the "more..." button on the quick-list at the bottom of the screen), and make your selection. You can also select the categories associated with the seven quick-pick buttons. Simply select Settings under the Edit menu, pick the categories and enter how you want them to appear on the buttons and hit 'Done' to save the changes.

To select another UNIT, click on the unit name that you want to change to obtain a pulldown list, and make your selection.

You can SWAP the ordering of the units (i.e. turn an INCH to METER conversion into a METER to INCH conversion) by hitting the circular icon with the "up" and "down" arrows.

NUMERIC VALUES for the top unit are entered using the keypad on the lower right of the screen (numeric values cannot be entered for the bottom unit; use the swap feature instead). Hitting the "back arrow" will delete the last number entered, whereas hitting "Clr" will clear the entire entry. You can enter a number in scientific notation using the "Exp" key to indicate the power-of-10 exponent.

Your last conversion of each category is recorded so next time you come back to a perticular category your last conversion will be displayed.

Under the Edit menu you will find the Copy and Paste functions. You can use the Copy function to write the highlighted number in either the input box or the conversion result to the clipboard and share it with other palm programs. You can also paste the content of the clipboard to the input box by using the 'Paste to Input Box' function.

To add a custom unit, first select the CATEGORY as described before, then select Custom Units from the Edit menu. The base unit of the selected category is shown along with the formula by which the Factor is defined. Enter the name of the new unit and the Factor (a number) and then click Add. You can add as many custom units as you wish and you can edit or delete them any time by selecting Custom Units from the Edit menu again.

The program also includes the SI Prefixes and a list of common physical constants. Both of these features can be accessed via the MISC menu.

Registration

The free-distributed demo version of UnitsIQ allows conversions within the 7 categories on the quick-pick list at the bottom of the screen. To access all 75 categories (and to show your support for this kind of software!), please register the UnitsIQ program. Registration only costs fifteen dollars ($15 USD).

When registering, please provide the ID NUMBER from your Palm which is provided under the Info menu. In return, you will obtain a key that will enable the full program version.
