| Established in 1904, The Wakefield Corporation was originally in the oil-impregnated wood bearing business. Founded as the Neveroil Bearing Company, it served the New England textile industry for many years. In the 1930's, the porous bronze bearing business started to develop in America and Wakefield made the transition from wood products to powdered metal products. During the early 1950's,Wakefield began producing structural parts in addition to bearings.
Wakefield is located in the suburban Boston area where the number of powdered metal fabricators is relatively low. Because of this, we have been able to assemble and retain a core of experienced set-up people and operators, many with over 20 years of service. Not only are we able to make small and medium runs profitably, our stable and experienced workforce produces a product of excellent quality.
Wakefield maintains a full metallurgical laboratory, headed by a graduate metallurgist, for both research and process control. In recent years, our sintering equipment has been updated and we are currently using Nitrogen as a sintering atmosphere.
While a large majority of powder pressed at Wakefield is ferrous, we still produce a substantial amount of bronze, copper, brass, and stainless steel parts. In the ferrous category, we work with prealloyed low alloy steels, copper and nickel steels, air hardening steels and free-machining alloy systems. Further, we have blending expertise and equipment to develop and furnish special materials for specific applications.
