Gage Resistance

The electrical resistance of a strain gage is directly related to its sensitivity. For a given wire gage of a material, the higher the resistance, the higher the sensitivity.

  • Select a higher resistance gage, e.g., 350 or 1000 W, if
  - Higher sensitivity is desired.
  - Compatibility with existing instrumentation is desired.
  • Select a lower resistance gage, e.g., 120 W, if
  - Fatigue loading is an issue (Lower resistance wire is larger in diameter, and more fatigue resistant).
  - Cost is an issue. 120 W gages are usually less expensive than 350 W gages.
