Fiber optic transceivers are transmitter/receiver modules that are pre-packaged in a standardized form. They offer convenience and the low cost of mass production.

Transceiver design issues include the following:

  1. Low cost.
  2. High data-rate.
  3. Mechanical compatibility of connector interfaces.
  4. Cross-talk between transmitter and receiver electronics.
  5. Electronic noise (EMI) issues, both with respect to emissions and susceptibility.
  6. Ease of manufacture (i.e. manufacturability).
  7. Minimal footprint.
Examples
Below are illustrated four transceiver configurations from the early 90's.
