In circuit design, passive electronic components refer to ones that are not capable of power gain and/or capable of operating without an external power source. Under this definition, passive components include capacitors, inductors, resistors, diodes, and transformers. At the same time, devices like transistors, vacuum tubes, relays, glow tubes, current sources, and voltage sources are excluded. Note that this is a rather informal definition.
