Level sensors detect the level of substances that flow, including liquids, slurries, granular materials, and powders. All such substances flow to become essentially level in their containers (or other physical boundaries) because of gravity. The level measurement can be either continuous or point values.
Sensors for both Point Level Detection or Continuous Monitoring of Solids and Liquids may employ the following detection methods:
- Capacitance
- Optical interface
- Ultrasonic
- Microwave
Common point and continuous level detection for solids include
- Vibrating point
- Rotating paddle
- Admittance-type
Point level detection of liquids can be categorized into
- Magnetic and mechanical float
- Pneumatic
- Conductive
Continuous level measurement of liquids
- Magnetostrictive
- Resistive chain
- Hydrostatic pressure
- Air bubbler
- Gamma ray
