Data acquisition (DAQ) is the process of sampling signals that measure real world physical conditions and converting the resulting samples into digital numeric values that can be manipulated by a computer.
The components of data acquisition systems include:
- Sensors that collect physical parameters and convert them to electrical signals
- Signal conditioning circuitry to amplify the signals and reduce noises
- Analog-to-digital converters that convert the analog signals to digital values and transfer to the computer
- Computer including the software that controls the data acquisition and processes the collected data
