Grinding is a machining process that uses a abrasive as the cutting tool to remove or finish the surface of an object. Grinding is a subset of cutting based on the fact that each grain of abrasive functions as a microscopic single-point cutting edge. However, it is often categorized as a finishing process based on it purpose that is to improve surface finish, abrade hard materials, and tighten the tolerance on flat and cylindrical surfaces by removing a small amount of material.

A grinding process required an abrasive served as the cutting tool. An abrasive can be used to finish a workpiece through rubbing which leads to a smooth, reflective surface or rough, matte surface as in satin or beaded finishes. Abrasives are extremely commonplace and are used very extensively in a wide variety of industrial, domestic, and technological applications.
