A hoist is a lifting or pulling device. A hoist can be either powered or manual. Most hoists are designed for vertical lifting, although horizontal configuration is also available.

Common mounting configurations of hoists include trolley mount, lug mount, and suspension hook. The materials for the primary lifting lines of a hoist include wire ropes and cables, fiber ropes, webs and straps, and chains.
