• The part has special requirements in precision, materials, finish, etc.
• The volume of parts needed is too low to justify other forms of fabrication
• The parts are needed very quickly

Depending on the design requirements custom machined parts might be made on one or more machines in a typical machine shop such as a lathe, a milling machine, a stamping press, a drill press, etc. Today most custom machined parts are made on CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machines based on output of CAD (Computer Aided Design) files.
