ASTM AZ91A-F is categorized as Magnesium Alloy. It is composed of (in weight percentage) 9.00% Aluminum (Al), 0.13% Manganese (Mn), 0.70% Zinc (Zn), and the base metal Magnesium (Mg). It is usually used in die casting. Other designations of ASTM AZ91A-F magnesium alloy include UNS S20910, ASTM A276, ASTM A580, and ASTM A412.
Magnesium is a silvery-white metal that is principally used as an alloy element for aluminum, lead, zinc, and other nonferrous alloys. Magnesium is among the lightest of all the metals, and also the sixth most abundant on earth. Magnesium is ductile and the most machinable of all the metals. Magnesium has a protective film to protect against corrosion, however it is easily corroded by chlorides, sulfates, and other chemicals, therefore magnesium is often anodized to improve its corrosion resistance.
The typical elastic modulus of magnesium alloys at room temperature (25°C) is about 44.8 GPa. The typical density of magnesium alloys ranges from 1.77 to 1.83 g/cm3. The typical tensile strength varies between 152 and 379 MPa. The wide range of ultimate tensile strength is largely due to different heat treatment conditions.
