Glass Fiber Reinforced SMC, BMC Low Density Polyester is a subcategory of Polyester. The additative is added during the manufacturing process. Its elastic modulus ranges from 1400 to 2500 MPa. Its flexural modulus ranges from 1000 to 2500 MPa. Its tensile strength ranges from 4000 to 20000 MPa at break. Its flexural strength ranges from 10000 to 35000 MPa. Its compressive strength ranges from 15000 to 30000 MPa. Its Izod Impact strength ranges from 2.5 to 18 J/cm. Its elongation at break ranges from 2 to 5 %. Its specific gravity ranges from 1 to 1.5. Its coefficient of thermal expansion ranges from 6 to 30 x 10-6/°C. Its molding pressure ranges from 0.5 to 2 MPa.
Polyester is a thermoplastic or thermoset polycondensate. Common trade names are Valox and Celanex. It has excellent dimensional stability, high dielectric strength, and good toughness. It has moderate chemical resistance, low resistance to strong acids and bases, and is notch sensitive. However, it is not recommended for outdoor use or in hot water. Polyester is very popular in making clothing and handles.
