Impact Modified PS is a subcategory of Polystyrene. The additative is added during the manufacturing process. Its elastic modulus ranges from 270 to 360 MPa. Its flexural modulus ranges from 280 to 490 MPa. Its tensile strength ranges from 4500 to 5500 MPa at break. Its flexural strength ranges from 7600 to 13000 MPa. Its Izod Impact strength ranges from 2.5 to 6 J/cm. Its elongation at break ranges from 10 to 35 %. Its hardness ranges from 75 to 109 Rockwell R. Its specific gravity ranges from 1.05 to 1.09. Its coefficient of thermal expansion ranges from 47 to 88 x 10-6/°C. Its molding pressure ranges from 12 to 17 MPa.
Polystyrene, also known as PS, is a thermoplastic polymer. The most common trade name is Novacor 555. styrene / maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer It is an inexpensive material that is not structurally strong but easy to mold. It machines well, and is highly transparent. PS is commonly used for inexpensive packaging materials, pens, safety razors, flatware, and CD jewel boxes. In Styrofoam forms, PS is used to make high-throughput, thin-walled, easy-to-mold parts where structure is not paramount.
